S.U.N.K.

S.U.N.K. is a SHMUP where you take control of a steampunk submarine as you dive deep into the ocean. As the waters get darker, the monsters get bigger.

My first proper game!

S.U.N.K. was made by a small group of students, myself included, as a part of a game design assignment. For me, and some of the others, this was the first proper game we worked on.


The intent was to create a SHMUP-style game, where the player starts out strong and big, and as the game progresses the camera will zoom out to reveal ever more large and deadly enemies.

Insights


QA

During this project I discovered the joy of QA. Do not mistake this for sarcasm, as I am perfectly serious when I say that it was here that testing, tweaking and balancing became one of my favorite parts of game development. As a designer, this was a great learning experience.



UI

In this project I was also tasked with the UI design (menu, logo, HUD). This included some of the implementation in Unity, as well as the graphical design. As I come from a background of Media and Communication, this was an exciting opportunity to explore graphic design in games.



Scripting

The last learning experience I had in this game was in regards to programming, as I stepped in as a secondary programmer, in charge of the entire boss sequence, and some implementation in the primary sections of the game. Whilst not perfect in execution, I learned a lot about how to work as a team inside the code of a game, which I have since applied in other projects.
